Grrl Wrap: Year Round Grrl Action, Sat May 14th 7pm

Grrl Wrap for Year Round Grrl Action happens on Saturday May 14th at the Off Shoot. 7pm.

Last weekend several of the grrls displayed and performed their projects at Willow Arts Studio on Austin's super groovy East side of town. Annemarie performed a monologue she'd written. Lucero, Neka, and Michaela shared their photographic exhibits. Emelia displayed her gorgeous sculptures. Rebecca surprised us all with a rap she composed and performed. Charlee showed her manga and several pieces of clothing she'd designed and built. And Val sketched on site! It was a wonderful experience for all.

Please join us in a little over a week for Grrl Wrap, the culmination of nine months of Grrl Action. Each grrl will give a seven minute presentation on their experience--the joys, the challenges, their processes, and what they plan to create next! See images of the grrls' work and share their stories. It will surely prove to be inspiring and heartwarming.

The format is a little different this year. We invite you to take in visual images of the grrls’ art projects as they give a presentation on the process of developing, creating and performing their work this last year. Meet the amazing mentors who guided the grrls through these projects, and enjoy a cookie or three as we cheer the young artists on!

Grrl Action Summer Workshop 2011

Grrl Action is a three-week summer workshop in which teenaged girls envision, create, publish, and perform original works for the stage based on their own life experiences. Girls between the ages of 13-16 are eligible.

After a short break we went off to a poster making workshop with Grrl Action at the Rude Mechs. (Rude Mechanicals of Austin Texas Theater Company).

Grrl Action is a program run by the Rude Mechs and a more incredible group of young women I have never met. WHY?

They were articulate.

They were willing to participate.

They were generous with their ideas and their creativity with each other and with us.

Their concerns: deforestation, feeling wanted, Israel, teenage dating, Lesbian and Gayism, violence against women, body image, not as strong as boys, and about 30 more topics. In about 4 minutes.

They thought over everyone's ideas before voting.

They asked whose idea a topic was if they didn't understand it and asked if she could explain.

They explained their ideas and took all questions seriously.

They stopped for snacks.

They had focus.

They rescued grasshoppers from inside and brought them outside.

They stood up and shared their work process.

They listened to each other.

They gave positive feedback to each other without any hesitation.

They were supportive of their community.

They were able to express their strengths and insecurities as individuals and as women.

We the aging women of America are in good hands. I did not want to leave.

Guerilla Girls Visit Grrl Action and UT Women's Studies Students

Exciting News! The Guerilla Girls are coming to the Off Shoot tomorrow night. From 7-9:30 the Guerillas will host a poster making workshop with Grrl Action and UT students. This is so cool! In fact, earlier in Year Round Grrl, we watched a great documentary film called, Who Does She Think She Is?, in which the GG make an appearance advocating for women's rights. How lucky we are to continue this particular line of thought with the grrls and bring the Guerillas to them. Thank you Madge for your resourcefulness and creativity!

Grrl Action is in full swing now and the grrls are rocking! This year in Year Round Grrl we are doing things a bit differently. Instead of the nine month program culminating in girl's performances, we are asking that the girls and their mentors perform or show the final projects in an off-campus venue for an audience of their peers. Then on May 14th at the Off Shoot each girl will give a seven minute presentation (visual aids included) about their process in realizing their art, the performance of that art, and share an analysis of the strengths and challenges they encountered along the way. That means that by the time Year Round Grrl has ended the girls will not only be able to produce art, but they will be able to discuss their work and own it in an intimate way. That's what I call empowerment!

--must prepare for today's workshop. Madge and I are holding individual conferences with the girls while the others draw body maps. Should be fascinating and fun.

Holy cow. We killed it today at The Off Shoot. It should look pretty darn great in time for Grrl Wrap on May 15th and 16th. Big Rude thanks to:

Peter and Nicole at Studio 512 for pro bono design services and weeks and weeks of labor. We got the CO, yo!!;

the UT Architecture School students for weeks of donated super skilled labor;

Laos House - Center for Personal Learning for the donation that made it possible, and hard work today from Gaynell, Mary, Ross and Mason;

Sarah Sloan, Carrie Kenny, and Carrie's whole family for the John Kenny Writing Center;

Grrls will go to Women and Their Work, Kia Neill exhibit

Tomorrow, Grrl Action participants will visit Women and Their Work's current exhibit, Terrain - showcasing the work of Texas artist Kia Neill. Of her work, Neill writes:

"Through sculpture and installation, I create simulations of nature that blur discomfort and the fantastic. I am interested in extraordinary, almost alien, natural landscapes, such as caves and coral reefs, as well as the diorama of miniature collectable counterparts that serve in household aquariums, souvenir cases, gardens, etc. I am particularly attracted to cavernous spaces, as a setting such as this may offer a type of sanctuary and yet can also evoke feelings of entrapment or disorientation. With my installations, I attempt to produce an environment that reifies metaphysical association and fantasy such bizarre landscapes can induce."

Terrain creates a dark, cave-like setting within the gallery, with sparkling lights and crystals made out of upcycled materials. We think the grrls will love it and get some great ideas for their own art projects!

What a Weekend!!!

Grrl Action had a busy weekend.

Not only did we participate in the Girls Now! Conference over at the Ann Richards School on Saturday (http://www.genaustin.org/whatwedo/girlsnow.php), where we led a workshop on autobiographical writing and performance, we also held open studios and a sneak peek party to celebrate the renovation of The Off Shoot -- an art space created for and dedicated to the artistic endeavors of the teenage girls who participate in Grrl Action!

We had over 50 supporters come out to show their love of Grrl Action and donate towards the completion of The Off Shoot! We are so grateful to have such wonderful fans. There were several grrls in attendance, helping us sell t-shirts and showing off their art pieces.

In total we raised $1600 of the remaining $15K that we need to pay for HVAC and cabinetry costs. THANK YOU to all of you who came out and gave your support.

We also must thank Grrl Action steering committee members Amy Averett, Carrie Kenny, Sarah Miller, Lisa Moore and Nadine Mozon -- who helped tremendously in preparation for yesterday's event!

And Sunday, DA! Collective held a Grrl Action special benefit performance of Leave it to Beverly, a hilarious and smart production now playing at The Off Center through November 21st. Grrl Action Open Studios and Off Shoot Sneak Peek Party!

Tomorrow, November 14th, Grrl Action will celebrate the current renovation of The Off Shoot, a classroom and rehearsal space dedicated to the creative endeavors of teenage girls! First, an open studio from 12-5pm will exhibit works by grrls and their mentors. And at 5pm, we'll start the "sneak peek" party, with pizza and beer and special tours of the space mid-renovation. Heading out on the East Austin Studio Tour? Make us an unofficial stop on your route, or come by at the end of the day! Events are free, but donations to help us with the completion of the renovation will be cheerfully accepted!

Pump Project Art Complex exhibit -- Women Printmakers!

Today Grrl Action got a special sneak preview of an awesome exhibit of prints by women artists. We are grateful to the folks (Debra!) at Pump Project Art Complex (www.pumpproject.org), for giving us an exclusive, private tour of the show, which opened tonight. It is fabulous. Over 30 members of Women Printmakers of Austin (www.womenprintmakers.com) have their works on the walls of Pump's lovely gallery. From monotypes to serigraphs, the prints in the show are engaging, multifaceted, and inspiring. In fact, many of the grrls saw things today that sparked ideas for their own projects.

The show runs through October 17. Pump Project is located near the corner of 7th St. on Shady Lane in East Austin.

Fall 09 Grrl Action workshops have begun!

We are thrilled to announce that we have started our Fall 09 workshops, and have 18 girls participating this year! This year's group includes girls who participated in our Summer 09 workshop and girls from last year's program.

Each participant will be completing her own art project with the help of a mentor -- a professional woman artist from Austin's vibrant arts community. Last year's projects ranged from photography and film to choreography and playwriting. We are excited to help the girls get started on project planning. This Fall, we'll be taking the girls to galleries and museums, performances and arts events; bringing in skilled guest artists to lead several workshops; and going on a two day intensive brainstorming and team building retreat.

Grrl Action Summer Performances Were Inspirational!

What a way to celebrate 10 years of Grrl Action! The 2009 Summer Workshop ended with two powerful performances this past weekend. Nineteen girls, from all walks of life and all across Austin, shared their original performances filled with brave writing, poetry, song, and dance, and moved many of us to tears with their honesty. We are so very impressed by this amazing group. Thanks to everyone that came out to hear their stories and support them - that means everything!

We were joined on Saturday by Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who praised Grrl Action for the important work it does in encouraging girls' self-expression, and he congratulated Rude Mechs on our Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant. We are honored that he took the time during his short visit to Austin to so enthusiastically support Rude Mechs and our programming. Congressman Doggett was right, we need your support! We are renovating a classroom dedicated to the girls and still have money to raise toward completion. Let us know if you can help!

And we owe big thanks to Emily Little for hosting the reception (and bringing so many fabulous women to the performance!), and to Margaret Hejny and company member Leilah Stewart for preparing such awesome frozen treats to mitigate July in Austin! Thank you all!!!

Many of the girls who participated this summer will be returning in September to continue on in Grrl Action's Year-Round Program. This fall, we'll help them devise long-term artistic projects of their choosing, and match them with professional women artists who will serve as their mentors. Projects will be shared publicly in the spring, and we hope you'll join us!

Congressman Doggett to Attend Grrl Action

Rude Mechs is thrilled to announce our selection as one of only three Austin-area agencies to receive funds from the National Endowment for the Arts American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. The funds will be used to support the preservation of jobs surrounding our outreach program for teenaged girls, Grrl Action, and the development of our new musical titled I've Never Been So Happy.

We are also deeply honored that Congressman Doggett plans to attend the Saturday, July 25th performance (2 pm) of Grrl Action to meet Grrl Action participants and their families and to say a few words to the Grrl Action audience before the show.

Grrl Action Summer Program - Week 2

We are two-thirds of the way to public performance with this amazing class of grrls. It's good to remind everyone that these stars are working to create an original live performance based on their lives, their opinions, their ideas. This week, they started to hone their ideas for their performances and to make decisions about the structure, theme, text, physical score, visuals, and sounds of their solo piece. Guest artist Kate Robinson led the girls in a movement workshop based on the work of Anna Halprin, and former Grrl Action Co-Director Carrie Fountain led them in a poetry and memory workshop. We also spent a day on body image. The girls wrote about this difficult subject and created individual body maps full of the recipes of their lives. The girls have submitted the writing that we will publish in the annual Grrl Action Anthology, and began working on the group pieces that will be scattered throughout next weekend's performances! We look forward to next week as we begin the rehearsal process!

Grrl Action Summer Program - Week 1

We just completed a very exciting first week of Grrl Action Summer '09!

Nineteen grrls are participating this year and each brings a unique and powerful voice to the workshop. So far, we've been writing extensively, using our favorite prompts by solo performance artist extraordinaire Deb Margolin. We were thrilled to have two wonderful Guest Artists with us this week. Florinda Bryant shared her next solo project, a powerful piece titled "Freeze." Terry Galloway ("Mean Little Deaf Queer") led the girls through an intensive writing workshop exploring their most significant memories. We've also begun embodiment and performance, with daily physical warm ups, a life story mapping movement activity, viewpoints, and group performance devising. Over the weekend, the girls will compose a 2-3 minute solo performance incorporating the work of the last week. We can't wait to see them on Monday!

OVERVIEW

The Summer Workshop is a three-week intensive workshop run by Rude Mechanicals, Austin’s award winning theatre collective, in which girls envision, create, publish, and perform original works for the stage based on their own life experiences. Girls work with professional writers, performers, and designers to put their stories on stage for two free public performances. The summer workshop kicks off the Grrl Action program-year, and graduates of the summer program are invited to participate in the year-round artistic mentorship program. No former experience with creative writing or performance is required.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Are you a girl between 13 and 16 who is interested in performing and writing? Are you excited about the idea of telling your own stories on stage? If so, Grrl Action might be a perfect fit for you. We look for girls with a desire to explore their creative voices in a diverse community of young women.

All participants in the summer workshop must complete an application prior to admission that helps us get to know them better and gather basic contact information and parent/guardian approval. Do you work with greater-Austin youth? We frequently partner with and recruit from other community organizations that work with youth in the Austin area. If you’re involved with such an organization and/or know a girl who might be a good fit for Grrl Action, we’re eager to talk to you too. We will organize recruitment presentations, meetings with prospective applicants, and packets of information about the program at your request. TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID

Tuition for the three-week summer workshop is $300. This covers all program expenses, including supplies, snacks, and any props, costumes, and technical needs for the final performances. Full and partial scholarships are available. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need only, and no girl will be turned away from the program because of financial reasons.

Grrl Action hosts meet-n-greet with our new cohort of Mentors!

This past Thursday at The Off Center, several amazing women artists working in diverse genres--from filmmaking and photography, to costume design and collage--met over wine and cheese to discuss our mentorships and offer each other support.

We all noted what an impressive group of mentors are working with the grrls this year, and how we wish we could be mentored by one another! Perhaps we ought to start an adult artistic mentoring program, too!

Keep your eyes and ears open for announcements of Grrl Wrap -- our festival in April which will publicly present each grrls' project grown out of these blooming mentorships.

A Strange Land!

Yesterday, the Grrls visited "A Strange Land" exhibit at Flatbed Press' Creative Research Lab -- 3D conceptual works dealing with landscape and urbanization. We spent over an hour wandering through the space, finding the pieces that struck us the most, then sharing the ways the works might inspire our own projects.
